A BRIEF HISTORY

Our Youth Camp is set in about 20 acres of beautiful woodland situated near Cremona on the Dog Pound Creek. The land was generously donated by Lion Lionel Bird of Cremona with the proviso that it be used for a non-profit endeavour. The start of the development of what was to become the Camp was led by District Governor Dave Deitz. District Governors who followed him carried out further development to provide a facility dedicated for use by the youth of Alberta and today we have one of the finest camps in Alberta.

Back in the 1980’s when it was initially developed, land was cleared, trees planted, cabins built and equipped and a central facility building constructed which contained kitchen, dining and general activities hall and storage. All of this was completed using volunteer labour donated by the Lions Clubs of south-central Alberta. The management of the Camp was set up as a non-profit corporation under the Societies Act of Alberta.

Since then, ongoing improvements by all of the Lions Clubs in the District have provided a facility that comprises –

  • a 24 bed bunkhouse (built in the summer of 2008)
  • 9 – 8 bunk cabins that are heated for year round use and have electricity laid on. Two are wheelchair accessible.
  • A central building comprising an activities/dining hall, full commercial kitchen and storage.
  • A first class washroom facility that also includes a first aid station
  • Ball diamond and soccer field
  • Childrens’ play area

The location is used regularly by Scouts, Guides, and Beavers etc. who find it ideal for activities that their Leaders can organize in an environment that lends itself to year round outdoor and adventure activities.

The Camp is an ongoing development of the District so improvements and additions to the facility continue to be made.

Emphasis on promoting the use of the Camp by youth organizations is of prime importance to comply with the original dream of Dave Deitz over 40 years ago however, the facility is ideal for family reunions, school band weekends etc.

The Clubs of the District have done a splendid job of supporting this vital project and it is anticipated that this support will continue and ensure that the Camp will be available for the Youth of the area for many years to come. Tentative plans are afoot to institute some International Youth Exchange Seminars at the Camp as part of the ongoing thrust to ensure that maximum use is made of the facility in furthering the skills and ambitions of our youth.
